Common licensing questions
Isn't an off-duty cop 'licensed enough'?+
Off-duty LE has excellent training, but does not carry a PPO, does not carry commercial GL that names your project as additional insured, and does not put your project on their W-C policy. Use them for cash escorts, not overnight patrol.
What actually happens if I hire an unlicensed guard and there's an incident?+
Your GC's GL becomes primary. Your W-C picks up any officer injury. Any use of force by the unlicensed guard is presumed to be your act. Your loss-run compounds. This is the single biggest hidden cost in Sacramento security spend.
How do I verify a PPO in 30 seconds?+
search.dca.ca.gov → License Search → Bureau of Security & Investigative Services → Private Patrol Operator → enter the number → status must read 'Clear' or 'Active'.
What about 'security consulting' companies?+
Consulting is not licensed as guarding. Any company posting an unarmed guard on your site — even in a consulting engagement — must hold a PPO or the work is unlicensed under BPC §7582.1.
